One resource that seniors have plenty of is time. January is National Hobby Month and an opportunity to find new ways to spend that time. For many seniors, afflictions like loneliness, depression, or isolation can feel very real. This January is an opportune time for seniors to find new activities that might help to battle those very real emotions.

Seniors can celebrate National Hobby Month in a variety of ways. One possibility is to increase the time spent on a hobby or passion. Another way to celebrate the month would be to try a variety of new activities, to see if there is a hobby that you love that you simply haven’t found yet.

Activities for National Hobby Month

We have some suggestions below for healthy hobbies that are ideal for seniors.

Exercise – This can mean something different to everyone. For some, it may mean taking a 10-minute walk. For others, it may mean regular trips to the gym or running. If you’ve been inactive for long periods of time, it may be helpful to start small and increase from there.

Cooking – For some, cooking can be a great passion, and a creative way to spend your time. It’s important for seniors to eat healthy foods, and one way to accomplish this is to cook more. You may find that this is a creative outlet and an enjoyable way to spend time.

Volunteer – A hobby may be as simple as helping others. Volunteering is a great way to stay connected with people and get out of the house. This can be an excellent way to help with loneliness or isolation.

Travel – What are the places that you’ve always wanted to see? It may be time to travel and experience the world a little more.

Reading – Reading can be an excellent way to spend time. You can take the opportunity to learn more about subjects that interest you, or to simply get lost in a powerful novel.

The Important Thing is To Try
